Its like you read my mind! You appear to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you could do with some pics to drive the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog. A fantastic read. I'll definitely be back.

I think the term 'LMS' is decent for general usage for software that manages any type of education. Do people think there should be other terms for more specific LMSs? Like for an LMS dedicated to business training as opposed to school-style learning. These are questions I'm currently thinking of. I know the term "training management system/software" is gaining traction as of late.

I agree with both points of view: (a) that the LMS is doing what it was supposed to do and also (b) that it can do more.
In fact the first thought I had was that the 'Learning Management System' is just that: a system that will help the Learning Manager/ learner to manage learning material as per an individual’s or group’s requirements, and NOT determine these needs by itself.
But I also think that with our changing view of what computing has made possible and its vast potential to make so much more possible, we already expect a lot more from our existing tools and programs. We now expect anything that uses any kind of programming to automatically compute (perhaps ‘intuit’ might be a better word) our needs and, perhaps take humans (the Learning Manager in this instance) out of the equation.
So even if the LMS does not now manage learning, eventually it should. In other words, while the LMS in its current form is doing exactly what it was designed for (and has also evolved into a more sophisticated, multi-functional tool), our understanding of that term has undergone a revolutionary change rather than an evolutionary change and its time the LMS woke up to that challenge.

Foo, yes that would also be a challenge - to re-coin a universally acceptable term. It might happen that as the industry continues to evolve some new terms might emerge which catch up well and fast enough and become acceptable. All terms that become acceptable are mostly a process of a kind of natural and gradual selection rather than a thought-out consensus.
