eLearning Delivery and Assessment Management for an Educational Institute

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan's S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR), an autonomous Management institute, is one of the top ten business schools in India. It has to its credit - five centers with multifarious activities, two-year full time postgraduate diploma (equivalent to MBA) and a few continuing executive education programs.
Need
SPJIMR is a highly dynamic institute with a reputation of being very innovative in both curriculum design and course delivery. Being an early adopter of technological changes in the education industry, SPJIMR wanted to move on to eLearning for its course delivery and exam/assessment management.
It was looking for a web-based system that could create and manage multiple online tests/ quizzes/ assessment for different subjects within various courses, regularly. It had to be a highly secure system – one that would be able to handle concurrency, allowing fair evaluation of the students in both internal and external environment.
Additionally, it wanted a centralized eLearning delivery platform, which would enable it to control, manage and allocate eLearning courses to different batches within various specializations so as to leverage the benefits of blended learning.
A robust platform being able to handle all the dynamics of course and assessment management, and yet able to minimize operational and administrative challenges of an educational institute was a challenge.

Upside Learning worked closely with the institute to customize UpsideLMS as per its specific functional and reporting requirements. The system was designed to host and manage eLearning curriculums for its various programs thus, benefitting the students and faculty members alike. While, its comprehensive assignment and assessment module enabled easy authoring and administration of various tests, and in-class and time-based tutorial submissions.

As per the institute’s requirement, UpsideLMS was designed to reflect all the scheduled assessments and courses for the respective student. A student could see his/ her progress in terms of the marks/ grade against the assessments taken up. All the courses once taken up/ completed would move into the archive section. The admin, on its discretion, could provide the control to retake the course by student.
The LMS would send an email notification to the students about the course/assessment schedule and criteria. On the discretion of the institute, they could also send the corrected copies of the assessments to the students via email.
SPJIMR could easily manage its own ‘Question Bank’ for all the courses, creating efficiency in assessment creation and management. Actionable reports were generated by UpsideLMS’ extensive MIS reporting module. Apart from the 37 standard built-in reports, the administrator could use various filters and generate exhaustive reports based on the same.
The system’s ‘Helpdesk’ feature enabled a smooth doubt clarification process through efficient trouble shooting of queries. Here an instructor was assigned to the respective course and queries raised by the students were sent to the respective instructor in form of an email. While, high security features, based on various controls, prohibited students from indulging in malpractices (like copying) and helped maintain the decorum of every assessment.
The assessment engine helped SPJIMR to conduct various kinds of assessments, both in the internal (Computer Lab/Classroom) and external environment (Hostel/ College Premise/ Outside College premise). It also helped manage high student concurrency in a single assessment.
