Boomers Adopt Consumer Technology 20x Faster!

Written by

Keeping generational differences in mind while designing learning is something we practice consciously. While we strongly believe in these cognitive and perceptive differences, occasionally we have data that throws a lot of our assumptions out of gear.

Accenture has published exactly this sort of data about the adoption of consumer technology by Boomers and Gen X and Y. Their findings represent research completed in the winter of 2008/2009 and provides direct comparisons with last winter’s 2007/2008 data.

Here are some juicy tidbits that caught us by surprise:
Boomers are embracing consumer technology applications nearly 20 times faster than the younger generation
Boomers increased their rate of reading blogs and listening to podcasts by 67 percent year-over-year. That’s nearly 80 times faster than Gen Y
Boomers accelerated playing video games on the go via mobile devices by 52 percent—20 times faster than Gen Y

This seems to suggest that boomers are better placed financially to afford such consumer technology applications and have available free time for its use. This isn’t the case with Gen X, which is busy with careers and tends to view technology from that perspective. A similar situation exists with Gen Y consumers, who’ve been quick on the uptake and are early adopters but whose usage has dropped with time.

There is lots of other interesting information in this must read article. Read it here.
