MEANINGFUL INTERACTIVITIES

ENGAGEMENT INFLUENCES OUTCOMES

Learner engagement is a critical element in any eLearning strategy. Learner Engagement has a lot to do with the degree of attention of learners, their interest, curiosity and passion for learning. Engaging content serves as the foundation of any impactful eLearning course and broadly, there are three key elements that help ensure that the content is engaging.

The first step to creating engaging elearning is to identify the ultimate Purpose of employee behaviour change that the learning aims at. Cathy Moore's Action Mapping process is a great way to understand this bit. It is a four-pronged approach that involves Identifying the business goal, Identifying what people need to do to reach that goal, Designing activities that help people practice each behaviour and Identifying the minimum information that people need to complete each activity.

The next step towards engaging eLearning is to ensure there is enough Motivation for the learners. This means that the question What's In It For Me has to be answered right at the beginning. Motivation is also about making the course purposeful and conversational so that it is worth the time and effort of a busy workforce who are often looking to get done with the training activity ASAP. Bite-sized content works the best here considering lack of time, shorter attention spans and the necessity to access training content anytime, anywhere and sometimes even on-the-go. A responsive design that adheres to Mobile-First is another mantra that has to be remembered because content will be accessed on the myriad mobile device options available to today's workforce.

The third and last element for creating engaging eLearning is the aspect of Interactivity. Interactivity is essential for learners' engagement with the course content, co-learners and even with the instructor, which results in effective learning. Interactivities create a rich experience in eLearning, but only if they are meaningful for the learner. Some ways of achieving interactivity are by providing learners with a real life scenarios and corresponding feedback, introducing interesting stories, videos etc. By incorporating the right kind of interactivities and creating a flow within eLearning courses using the right media, it is possible to enhance the overall learning experience.

WHY COMPANIES MUST FOCUS ON MAKING ONBOARDING AN 'EXPERIENCE'

Onboarding is one of the first point-of-contact that new employees have with the company, its culture, values, policies, history and method of functioning. Considering that first impressions are so important, it is essential that every company must put in special efforts to make the process of onboarding a unique experience. A well-designed and engaging onboarding process can work wonders to bolster the association between a company and employee, right from the word go, literally!

THE TRUTH ABOUT TEACHING TO LEARNING STYLES, AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD?

  • Belief in the effectiveness of matching instructional approaches to "learning styles" persists despite a preponderance of evidence showing no relationship between teaching to learning styles, and learning outcomes

  • Some studies have shown a negative effect, in which attempts to cater to some defined learning style actually harm learning

- Does tailoring instruction to individual "learning styles" have an effect onlearning outcomes? Know more in this Report.

For employees' learning and development, organisations put lots of effort and time apart from investing huge sum of money. But getting a clear picture of the impact of learning on business remains a concern.

Brandon Hall Group's 2018 Learning Measurement Study explores approaches of different organisations towards colleting metrics to measure different types of learning to determine the ROI and impact on business results.

With all the collated data from various organisations, the Study lists out "Five Essentials for High-Impact Learning Measurement"

  • Business Leaders Must Help Define Learning ‘Metrics of Success'

  • Understand that ‘Metrics of Success' Apply to All Learning Types and Modalities

  • More Measurement is Good; Meaningful Measurement is Better

  • Focus on Performance-Based Outcomes for Measurement

  • Focus on Impact, Not Investment
