Can you play Flash after 2020? This is how

Shivaji Babar  |  May 18, 2020  |  Upside Learning

Home

It’s year 2020, and, as announced by Adobe, the timeline for Flash’s end-of-life is nearing. Major browser vendors have also announced they will stop supporting Flash Player after December 2020. End of support means users will not be able to download Flash Player plugin from the Adobe website and no updates on security patches will be provided.

Most businesses have migrated their Flash content to other technologies, mostly HTML5. Some are still converting; however they may not be able to convert completely by the end of 2020 because of the sheer volume of the content they currently have.

The question is, if they aren’t able to convert content completely because of some reasons, can they run Flash beyond 2020? We think they can play.

Though browsers have added some restrictions, they are still supporting Flash Player. These major browser vendors will release new versions to remove Flash support. So if users don’t update their browsers, they will still be able to run Flash.

Individual users will have to prevent their browsers from auto updating. If they can’t do this with some browsers, they can preserve old versions of Firefox (freely available open source and allows download of previous versions). They also need to preserve Flash Player plugin.

Organizations who control system and software updates through policies can prevent auto update of browsers. They can also preserve old browser versions and Flash Player plugin.

There are implications of using non-up-to-date browsers running on computers. Updates come with bug fixes, security fixes, new features and improvement of the web rendering engines. If browsers don’t get these updates, they might be vulnerable to security threats and attacks. Businesses like banking, who want to focus mostly on security, don’t want to go with this option. A solution could be that organizations can have a dedicated machine with old browser versions and Flash Player plugin to access applications that use Flash content.

Even though using old browsers and Flash Player plugin is a practical solution, it’s feasible only in the short term. So converting the content into other formats (popular is HTML5) remains the foolproof solution.

There are several groups have started working on a new web assembly player which will load inside web browsers. These web assembled players are not considered a plugin and thus will be supported by many browsers. The problem is that most of these groups have not released any updates for the last several months or have stopped working altogether. If they complete these projects and come up with the web assembly player, this could be good and long-term solution.

    Hi, thank you for the post!
    One question, do you think the trick to keep Flash running by preventing browsers from being updated, will work for all browsers?
    Thank you!

    As I understand it Flash is coming to an end and will be unavailable after December 2020.

    I have a MacBook Air OS10.13.6

    Will I have to find another way to run the things Flash does at present? and if so, what?

    theirs millions and millions of devices and apps out there that still use flash

    1/2 of them wont have been updated, this seems a lot like a rerun of the millennium bug

    especially because they wont release the source code so people can keep old sites and hardware running

    at the very least 10000’s of less visited older sites many with unique information that isn’t recorded anywhere else except in NSA data banks will essentially vanish
    at the very least that’s going to mean more lost information than when the library of Alexandria was bunt even if most of the info isn’t looked up by anyone for long periods of time/is obscure

    this seems to be a blatant attack on a open internet and decentralised information

    Excellent information! thanks

    Adobe’s EoL site for Flash says that content will be blocked from running after Dec31, so I’m not sure that not-updating will actually work. It sounds like they have hard coded a stop-date into the plugins.

    Hi Shivaji,

    Thanks for the information you posted. But are you very much certain that we can flash based applications in old versions of browsers? Is it confirmed by Google in case of Chrome?

    Please let me know your thoughts on this.

    Thanks,
    Abishek

    I think it’s over for flash content after January 11, no matter what we do, even if we use old versions of browsers.

    “Since Adobe is no longer supporting Flash Player after the EOL Date, Adobe will block Flash content from running in Flash Player beginning January 12, 2021 to help secure users’ systems. Flash Player may remain on the user’s system unless the user uninstalls it.”

    This is a great article. Thanks for sharing your expertise with the community.

    I want Adobe Flash Player to be no longer supported after 2020 but not to expire after 2020. I want it to have an update on 1/1/2021.

  15. Stan Rames January 5, 2021 at 12:01 am

    Here we are in 2021, Flash add-on still enabled in my two browsers. After the FF add-onmageddon, I removed as many paths for FF to update or mess with my add-ons.

    I am not unique, but different, in that I still use XP64-Pro, stuck with FF52ESR, and MyPal browsers (plus three or four more I can call on if needed).

    Just part of the Brave New World to get all the sheep compliant with The Vision.

    Hi Shivaji,

    This solution does not seems to be working now, do you have any other work around. If yes then please share, many thanks.

    Regards,
    Dipak

    Assuming it’s not too late (If you’ve run it since Jan 11, you may have lost files and need to find a working installer, which might be hard), we had luck with editing the Flash config file to allow specific domains so we don’t have to worry about random sites using flash. You probably have to explicitly include adobe in your allowed domains as it needs to check there:

    32-bit windows: C:\windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg
    64-bit windows: C:\windows\SysWOW64\Macromed\Flash\mms.cfg

    EOLUninstallDisable=1
    SilentAutoUpdateEnable=0
    EnableAllowList=1
    AutoUpdateDisable=1
    ErrorReportingEnable=1
    AllowListUrlPattern=https://*.domain1.com/
    AllowListUrlPattern=https://*.domain1.com/
    AllowListUrlPattern=*://*.adobe.com/

    It’s a pretty silly problem I have but I know I’m not alone.

    I play BigFish games and since the end of Adobe I can’t download from BigFish any longer.

    What flash can I replace it with?

    I am trying to avoid the problems that are inherent with trying something new that refuses to work or which mucks up the computer completely.

    Anyone got a simple Flash player that really works?

  20. K January 21, 2021 at 8:49 am

    Caldeathe,
    CAN I ACTUALLY JUST EDIT THE FILE FOR SPECIFIC WEBSITES WITH YOUR CODE THERE?!?
    or is there some more fenagaling to be done thats not shown??
    –sincerely, an absolute newb
